Australian experience

With a developed economy, education system ranked among the best of the world, stable politics, temperate climate, clean environment, multi-ethnic culture, friendly people, and excitement of cities, Australia becomes an ideal place for international students and tourists.

On your first period in Australia, there is generally a great adjustment, especially if this is the first time you have experienced a new culture. You can see a difference in etiquette, life style and viewpoint. Australians are not sticklers for principles; you might be surprised because you are accustomed to clear addressing in Vietnam. You will have many chances to meet people with different characters in real life.
It takes you a period of time to adapt to new environment and customs; at first, you may feel disappointed, lonely and homesick. Bear in mind that these feelings often come naturally to those who are away from home in the first period.
Below are some tips which can help you be more confident when planning to study in Australia:
  • Be optimistic. Think of the reasons why you choose to study in Australia.
  • Talk to people who have experienced situations like yours. They can give you some helpful advice.
  • Write a diary. This can help you record feelings you are experiencing in Australia.

Think about and carry out good things. Play sports or join a useful kind of entertainment, you will have chances to meet new friends.
  • Talk to native students and other international students, you will feel less lonely and isolated, and you will gain more helpful experience of studying.
  • Be flexible and willing to adapt to new environment.
  • Listen and observe manners and communication of people around you. If you don’t understand, ask them and you will have the answer.
  • If the above tips do not work on you, you really encounter difficulty in adapting; you should talk to international student counselors of your school.
Remember that like you, who are learning about Australian culture, Australians you meet may not know much about the culture of your country. You should explain, for example, what food you can eat and what you can’t, the way you make your food and when you often have meals. You should also explain your religious needs. Your explanation will enable others understand and help you. Like when you are at home, there may be some things you like, but there also may be some things you are not pleased with. But as time goes by, you will get used to them and feel more comfortable with the living style in Australia.
Do you know that Mr. Ly Quy Trung, Manager of Pho 24h shop network, used to study in Australia? He said: “In my opinion, Australia is an ideal environment for studying. Australia is so beautiful and friendly that I wish to have a chance to study there again. And that is the reason why I have advised and I am encouraging every people to choose Australia for their study. This feeling is like telling every people about an interesting film or trip that I have experienced”.
Life is difficult; therefore we must make good choices. When you have made up your mind, get deeply involved in your choice. I hope that the above experience will help to make you more confident in the way you choose!
